WWT, Cargo Worthy, IICL, or 1-Trip — Which Container Grade Is Right for You?

If you’ve ever shopped for a shipping container and felt like you needed a decoder ring to understand the listings, you’re not alone. Terms like “WWT,” “Cargo Worthy,” and “IICL” get thrown around constantly — and the difference between them isn’t just cosmetic. It can affect what you pay, how long the container lasts, and whether it actually fits your project.

At Container Sales AZ, we believe an informed buyer is a happy buyer. So here’s a plain-English breakdown of the four main container grades we carry, what each one means, and when each one makes sense.

1. Wind & Water Tight (WWT)

The budget-friendly workhorse for storage.

A Wind & Water Tight container — commonly shortened to WWT — is a used container that has been retired from active cargo shipping. It no longer holds a valid certification for ocean freight, but it does what the name says: keeps wind and water out.

These units are typically 10+ years old and will show their age. Expect visible surface rust, dings, dents, and some cosmetic wear. None of that affects performance for storage purposes — the container is structurally sound and the seals are intact.

2. Cargo Worthy (CW)

Used, inspected, and certified for shipping.

A Cargo Worthy container has been inspected by a licensed maritime surveyor and certified as structurally sound for active use in ocean freight. That’s a meaningful distinction. These units must meet U.S. Coast Guard guidelines, meaning they can be stacked, loaded, and shipped — not just stored.

Cargo Worthy containers are generally 10–15 years old. Like WWT containers, they’ll show real-world wear. The difference is the paperwork and the inspection behind them. Any structural issues, flooring problems, or excessive denting that would disqualify a container from shipping have been evaluated and documented.

3. IICL

The high standard for used containers.

IICL stands for the Institute of International Container Lessors — the trade organization that sets rigorous inspection and repair standards for the container leasing industry. An IICL-grade container has passed a more stringent inspection than a standard Cargo Worthy unit and typically represents a higher tier of used condition.

These containers are usually 7–12 years old with minimal wear, fewer visible repairs, and a longer remaining service life. They are certified for international shipping and meet the full requirements of the Convention for Safe Containers (CSC). If you’re comparing IICL to Cargo Worthy, think of it as the difference between a used car that passed a basic safety inspection versus one that passed a full certified pre-owned inspection.

4. 1-Trip (New)

As close to new as a container gets.

All shipping containers are manufactured overseas — primarily in China — and enter the U.S. loaded with a single shipment of goods. Once that cargo is delivered and the container is unloaded, it enters the resale market. That’s a “1-Trip” container. Despite being technically used, these units are as close to factory-fresh as you’ll find in the aftermarket.

A 1-Trip container will have virtually no rust, clean flooring, minimal exterior marks, vibrant paint, and a full service life ahead of it. If you want a container that looks sharp and performs at the highest level, this is your grade.
